Frequently Asked Questions
When should my child see a speech therapist?
If you’re concerned about your child’s speech, language, or communication skills, it’s a good idea to book an assessment with a Speech and Language Therapist. Some children benefit from therapy as early as two years old, while others may need support later as school demands increase. Early assessment helps identify any underlying difficulties and ensures your child gets the right support at the right time.
What are the signs my child might need speech therapy?
Every child develops at their own pace, but common signs that speech therapy could help include:
- Difficulty being understood by family or peers
- Trouble pronouncing certain sounds or words
- Limited vocabulary or short phrases for their age
- Challenges understanding instructions
- Frustration when trying to communicate
If you’ve noticed one or more of these signs, a Speech and Language Therapist can assess your child and recommend a plan tailored to their needs.
Should I speak only one language to my bilingual child with speech delays?
No, you don’t need to limit your child to one language. In fact, continuing to speak all the languages used in your family can strengthen overall language development. It’s normal for bilingual (or multilingual) children to mix words or prefer one language at certain times; this is part of healthy language growth.
Here in London, many of the families we work with speak two, three, or even more languages at home. Our Speech and Language Therapists celebrate this diversity and will guide you on how to support communication naturally in all the languages that matter to your family.

What you can expect
Say Hello With An Initial Phone Consultation
An initial phone consultation is an opportunity for you to discuss your concerns regarding your little one’s development. There is no pressure to come in and see us, so always feel free to call to say hello, ask questions and find out more about our services!
If The Children’s Place and you both agree this is the right place for you, an email with a welcome package will be sent to you. This is a chance for you to read more about The Children’s Place and fill out forms to help us learn more about your child. If requested, we will also set up a phone call to answer any of your questions after you read through the welcome package and set up an appointment for the initial assessment.
Initial Assessment
The assessment will consist of a parent interview and review of case history form, informal and formal assessment activities, determination and review of assessment conclusions and discussion of therapy recommendations. After the assessment, the therapist will develop a written report if requested and establish long and short-term strategic goals for your child to be reviewed with you.
Therapy
The length and amount of the weekly therapy sessions will be agreed upon. A mutually agreeable time will be established weekly for your children’s therapy session. A treatment plan with goals will be established, and as goals are mastered, new ones will be developed.
Activities and resources will be made available to families to carry over skills for practice. Goals are continually assessed informally and are re-evaluated every six months. Additional evaluations will be conducted as necessary to determine formal progress.
We provide therapy in our centres, in schools, nurseries or daycares, and in clients’ homes. At times, it is difficult for clients to travel to the clinic, and when possible, we are willing to try our best to accommodate home visits.
