Frequently Asked Questions

What does Occupational Therapy do for children?

Occupational Therapy (OT) helps children develop the skills they need to participate fully in everyday activities, from getting dressed and writing, to playing, focusing in class, and managing emotions.

Our Occupational Therapists assess a child’s motor, sensory, emotional, and cognitive development, then design practical, play-based activities that build coordination, independence, and confidence in daily routines at home and school.

What’s the difference between Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy?

While both support physical development, they focus on different areas:

  • Physiotherapy targets movement, muscle strength, and physical rehabilitation, often related to injury or medical conditions.
  • Occupational Therapy, on the other hand, focuses on how children use those physical and sensory skills in daily life, such as handwriting, dressing, attention, and emotional regulation.

At The Children’s Place, our Occupational Therapists work closely with physiotherapists and other professionals to ensure every child receives well-rounded, coordinated care.

When should my child see an Occupational Therapist?

If your child struggles with tasks such as handwriting, using cutlery, getting dressed, focusing in class, or managing frustration and transitions, an Occupational Therapy assessment may help.

Early intervention can make a big difference. Our therapists identify the underlying causes of these challenges and create strategies to support your child’s independence and confidence across settings.

How does Occupational Therapy help with autism?

For children with autism, Occupational Therapy plays a vital role in supporting sensory processing, emotional regulation, and daily living skills.
Our therapists help children understand and manage sensory input, build focus and flexibility, and develop the motor and self-care skills they need for greater independence.

Through structured, play-based sessions, OT can also enhance social participation, helping children feel calmer, more confident, and more capable in everyday life.

What you can expect

Say Hello With An Initial Phone Consultation

An initial phone consultation is an opportunity for you to discuss your concerns regarding your little one’s development. There is no pressure to come in and see us, so always feel free to call to say hello, ask questions and find out more about our services!

If The Children’s Place and you both agree this is the right place for you, an email with a welcome package will be sent to you. This is a chance for you to read more about The Children’s Place and fill out forms to help us learn more about your child. If requested, we will also set up a phone call to answer any of your questions after you read through the welcome package and set up an appointment for the initial assessment.

Initial Assessment

The assessment will consist of a parent interview and review of case history form, informal and formal assessment activities, determination and review of assessment conclusions and discussion of therapy recommendations. After the assessment, the therapist will develop a written report if requested and establish long and short-term strategic goals for your child to be reviewed with you.

Therapy

The length and amount of the weekly therapy sessions will be agreed upon. A mutually agreeable time will be established weekly for your children’s therapy session. A treatment plan with goals will be established, and as goals are mastered, new ones will be developed.

Activities and resources will be made available to families to carry over skills for practice. Goals are continually assessed informally and are re-evaluated every six months. Additional evaluations will be conducted as necessary to determine formal progress.

We provide therapy in our centres, in schools, nurseries or daycares, and in clients’ homes. At times, it is difficult for clients to travel to the clinic, and when possible, we are willing to try our best to accommodate home visits.
